In Focus: Cross Innovation – when creative processes drive change

Last week, STPLN took part in a Cross Innovation gathering hosted by Region Skåne and Region Blekinge, bringing together local and regional actors from a wide range of sectors. The conversation centred on how innovation can take shape when different perspectives, skills and ways of working meet — and on the crucial role of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs) in these processes.

Cross Innovation understands innovation not as a single moment or outcome, but as a process built through relationships. Real value emerges when people from different sectors work together over time — when creative practices intersect with industry, the public sector and complex societal challenges. In these intersections, new ideas, methods and solutions become possible.

The cultural and creative industries bring particular strengths to this kind of work. With a high share of micro-enterprises and independent practitioners, the sector is often agile, adaptive and used to working in constantly changing conditions. These qualities make CCIs valuable partners for organisations looking to strengthen their own capacity for innovation, rethink established structures and respond to change in more flexible ways.

At STPLN, we have been exploring Cross Innovation through a number of activities and collaborations. These experiences have reinforced our belief that meaningful innovation happens when cultural and creative practitioners are involved from the start — not as external consultants brought in at the end, but as active contributors throughout entire processes. Beyond urban development and innovation projects, we focus on creating spaces where different sectors can collaborate, experiment and learn from each other.

To truly support innovation, we also need to legitimise the process itself — to recognise the value of experimentation, uncertainty and different ways of thinking. This means building bridges between disciplines, discourses and dogmas. And it means asking a simple but fundamental question more often:

Where is the artist in the room?
